Whether you opt for an extensive or intensive green
roof or a rooftop garden, the building’s structure
should initially be designed to bear this extra load.
The existing structure will need to be analyzed by an
expert engineer who will specify what amount of
additional weight can be added onto the roof.
If for instance you plan to use your roof as a terrace
or a vegetable garden, you will be obligated to install
a guardrail or a parapet with a minimal height of 3.5 ft.
Additionally, you should obtain the proper information
on applicable regulations which can vary in each
municipality; some may require a guardrail installed
several feet from the edge of the roof.
A green roof can be exposed to strong winds. A few
construction elements such as a pergola or fixed
lattice walls will protect the plants from strong winds
while offering comfortable air circulation.
